In order to obtain a license, a driver must rack up 40 points over a three-year period from the FIA’s own grid, where it awards a certain number of points for finishing in a certain position in a variety of racing championships around the world.

Whereas drivers wishing to enter Ind圜ar have to pass various tests on certain types of courses, graded either subjectively by its stewards or objectively by running a pre-determined amount of laps at certain speeds. The super license is the FIA’s way of regulating which drivers they deem qualified to race in what is considered the epitome of motorsports. In order to race in F1, a driver must have a “super license” from the FIA, the governing body for motorsports around the world, including F1. That in and of its own right should at least dampen the second part of this equation – Herta headed to F1, as was the trajectory of his career six or seven years ago. But let’s assume, for the sake of the argument, that Andretti will soon acquire a majority stake in the investment company (Islero Investments) owned by parent company Longbow Finance, which purchased Sauber Motorsport, and originally ran and owned Alpha Romeo F1. Grand Prix in Austin in two weeks certainly would offer a great place for such a deal to be struck – or at least attempted, if Andretti’s finances were indeed lined up – but an announcement does not appear imminent.
